Frequently asked questions
- What is Awl, On Us?
- A free random restaurant picker (some people call it a random restaurant generator). Instead of a group chat going back and forth on where should we eat, Awl, On Us finds nearby restaurants, cafes, and bars and rolls one for you to try.
- Why does it need my location?
- Awl, On Us finds restaurants, cafes, and bars near you, so it needs to know roughly where you are to search. It can't pick a nearby spot without it — location access is only requested when you tap the button to search, never automatically.
- Where does restaurant data come from?
- From OpenStreetMap, a free, community-edited map of the world. Because volunteers maintain it, listings are sometimes outdated — a place might have closed or its hours might be wrong. If you spot something incorrect, openstreetmap.org is the canonical place to fix it, and the correction will eventually flow through to this app.
- Is it free?
- Yes. There's no cost and no account needed — just open the app and go.
- Can I choose miles or kilometers?
- Yes. There's a Miles / Kilometers toggle in the filters panel, right next to the search radius slider.
- How do I pick a restaurant near me?
- Open Awl, On Us, share your location, and tap roll. It pulls nearby restaurants, cafes, and bars and picks one for you — no more scrolling through search results trying to decide.
- Can I skip a specific restaurant?
- Yes. Tap the X on any restaurant card — in the list view or on a roll result — to temporarily skip it, and it won't come up again until you tap it a second time or hit Start Over. It's just for the current session, not a permanent block.
